Problem Statement

The Roadside Safety Pooled Fund has prioritized their research needs for various barrier systems. For this project, State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) chose to investigate current practices for locating W-beam guardrail terminals near curbs. While high-speed roadways are often designed without curbs, DOTs are sometimes required to provide a curb on a high-speed roadway. Currently, there is little guidance on the effects on the impact performance of W-beam guardrail terminals caused by curbs. Therefore, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) was tasked to review current literature and research on this topic and then collect information on how the members of the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund and manufacturers are currently handing W-beam guardrail terminals when they are located near curbs.

Objective

The objective of this project is to compile current literature and practices on W-beam guardrail terminals when located near a curb.

Benefits

This project will benefit the members of the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund by providing an overview on the current research and practice for locating W-beam terminals near curbs.

Products

The TTI research team will prepare and submit a research report fully documenting all of the work completed within this project.

Implementation

At the completion of this project, the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund will have guidance on the current research and practice for locating W-beam guardrail terminals near curbs

Work Plan

Task 1: Literature Review

The TTI research team will search to review previous literature and research regarding W-beam terminals located near curbs. The research will incorporate this information into the state survey developed in Task 2.

Task 2: Development and Distribution of State Survey

The TTI research team will develop a survey and will distribute to the members of the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund and w-beam terminal manufacturers. The research team will focus the survey on identifying the current practices when locating W-beam terminals near curbs. The survey will address the current research and literature to evaluate their level of implementation by DOTs. The research team will submit the survey to the technical representative of the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund for review and approval prior to distribution.

Task 3: Collection and Analysis of State Survey

The TTI research team will prepare a research report fully documenting the work completed in this project. The report will present the responses collected from the survey developed and distributed in Task 2. The research team will submit the report to the technical representative of the Roadside Safety Pooled Fund for review and approval.
